Instant Messaging Policy

Instant messaging (IM) has become another communication tool that extends a user’s options beyond using the telephone or electronic mail (email). Using existing Internet protocols to send and receive text messages in real time, IM client software is continuously exposed to the Internet and can be a potential vulnerability to company technology resources.
Under this policy, stringent rules on IM use at a company are required to minimize the risk of technology resources being disrupted or damaged by attack. This policy helps define the acceptable use of IM at a company and extends the policies outlined in the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).
